She began her acting career as a theater, radio, and television performer. Her early credits include roles in Polish series such as Doktor Murek and Czarne Chmury.
Her lead role in the 1980s film Przesluchanie (English title: Interrogation) earned her Cannes Film Festival and Polish Film Festival Awards.
Her first marriage was to Polish director and actor Andrzej Seweryn. She later married cinematographer Edward Klosinski.
She is known primarily for her roles in Andrzej Wajda-directed films.
