Kizza Besigye

Ugandan politician, doctor, and retired colonel known for being the foremost opposition to president Yoweri Museveni. He unsuccessfully ran against him in the 2001, 2006, 2011, and 2016 elections, all of which have been surrounded by controversy.
He attended Makerere University, where he studied medicine. He went on to work as Museveni's physician and was appointed as minister of internal affairs when Museveni took power in 1986.
He's also become known for his stance against Uganda's notoriously harsh penalties for homosexuality, which is illegal in the country.
He married Winnie Byanyima in 1988 and had a son with her.
Yoweri Museveni took power after leading the National Resistance Army in a military coup.
