She graduated from Bangalore University with a degree in Zoology in 1973.
She had to overcome doubts and resistance from banks and from society to build her business.
She married John Shaw, a Scotsman, who ran a textile firm in Indian from 1991 to 1998.
She carried on the legacy of Jamsetji Tata , founder of the Tata Group and another well-known Indian entrepreneur.
