Piloted the first Space Shuttle flight in support of "Mission to Planet Earth."
He attended the U.S. Naval Academy, Naval Postgraduate School, and the University of Southern California.
He was selected as Distinguished Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the U.S. Naval Academy in 2012.
He married Maureen McHenry and had two daughters.
He was a technical advisor for the film "Apollo 13" starring Tom Hanks.
