Federal judge who became the first commissioner of major league baseball after the Black Sox Scandal.
He left school at age 15 after failing algebra and worked at a local grocery store.
He is one of the few members of the Baseball Hall of Fame who never played the sport professionally.
His parents were Abraham Hoch Landis and Mary Kumler Landis.
When WWII broke out, he wrote to Franklin D. Roosevelt asking if baseball should be suspended. He replied, instructing Mountain to keep it going.
