He played his youth career with the Gamba Osaka and at Seiryo High School.
His cousin, Tamon Honda, competed in the 1984, '87, and '92 Olympic Games as a wrestler.
He married Misako, a kindergarten teacher, in 2008.
He became teammates with Shinji Kagawa on the Japanese national team.
