Elected on numerous occasions to the office of Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, this Indian Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam political party leader is also notable as a screenwriter, poet, essayist, journalist, fiction writer, songwriter, and playwright.
His first politically themed film, Parasakthi, established him as a person of great stature within both the Indian political arena and the Tamil film industry. He first entered the Tamil Nadu Assembly in the late 1950s.
He published and edited the Murasoli, Kudiyarasu, Mutharam, and Tamil Arasu political journals.
His marriages to Padmavathy Ammal, Dayalu Ammal, and Rajathi Ammal resulted in children named M.K. Tamilarasu, Kanimozhi, M. K. Muthu, Selvi, M.K. Stalin, and M. K. Alagiri.
During the 1990s and early 2000s, he and fellow politician Jayalalithaa alternately held office as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
