His given name was Kam Ton Chun, but after his first teacher misunderstood his name, he started going by Fong Chun, eventually making it his legal name.
He was a Honolulu policeman for 16 years before retiring and taking up acting.
He was born to his family in Honolulu, Hawaii.
He played the dependable sidekick to the show's star, Steve McGarrett, played by Jack Lord, from 1968 until 1978, leaving two years before the show was cancelled.
