A Bangladeshi writer, educator, and translator, he was the recipient of Ekushey Padak and Bangla Academy Awards. His works of nonfiction cover such topics as art, conflict resolution, and politics. He also translated their literary works by Anton Chekhov, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and John Steinbeck.
He earned a degree in English literature from Dhaka University in the 1940s.
He was a pioneer in Bangladesh's movement against Fundamentalism.
He had a brother named Munier and a sister named Ferdousi.
Early in his career, he was inspired by the works of H.G. Wells.
