Welsh composer best remembered for composing the hymn tune Aberystwyth, which was used in the national anthem of South Africa.
The small cottage where he was born is now a public museum.
He was the subject of the 1978 BBC program Off to Philadelphia in the Morning.
His family emigrated from Wales to the United States in 1854.
He and fellow composer Alice Mary Smith studied under the tutelage of the same music teacher, William Sterndale Bennett.
