Prolific striker who was named the International Federation of Football History & Statistics' greatest goalscorer of the 20th century in 2000. He has long held the record for most goals scored for top flight Czech club Slavia Praha and in Czechoslovak First League history.
He grew up playing soccer without shoes, which helped him hone his skill for ball control. He signed with Rapid Vienna at age 18 while playing for Hertha Vienna II.
He was a member of the famed Austrian national team during the 1930's that was nicknamed the Wunderteam. He led all of Europe in goalscoring five times during the 1930s.
His wife's name was Jarmila. His parents' names were František and Ludmila.
He is often named alongside Pelé as one of the greatest goal scorers soccer has ever seen.
