He studied jazz clarinet under the master Lorenzo Tio.
He was inducted into Down Beat Magazine's Jazz Hall of Fame.
He and his brother, drummer Warren "Baby" Dodds, frequently performed together.
He recorded jazz works with the great Louis Armstrong.
