He earned an athletic scholarship to the University of Miami after a stellar career at Christopher Columbus High School.
He gained a variety of nicknames including The Federalist, The Founding Father and The Chief Justice; all of which correspond to his sharing a name with John Jay, the former Founding Father of the United States and first Chief Justice of the nation.
He married Nikki Stecich in 2013.
He became a starter for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011, after Colby Rasmus was traded away.
