He got married 4 times: first to Joan Morrill (Jody) Wolcott on October 1, 1949, whom he had three sons with. He then was married to Joanne Copeland on August 17, 1963, to Joanna Holland on September 30, 1972, and finally to Alexandra (Alexis) Maas on June 20, 1987. He spent the last years of his life on his yacht.
David Letterman has remarked that he was influenced by his style of late show hosting.
