John Metcalf
Novelist
English-Canadian writer and editor who published his fourteenth work, Shut Up He Explained: A Literary Memoir, Volume II, in 2007. His earlier works include Shooting the Stars, Girl in Gingham, and The Teeth of My Father.
He moved from England to Canada in 1962 and published his first book, The Lady Who Sold Furniture, eight years later.
He was awarded the National Magazine Awards' Gold Medal for Fiction in 1996.
He was the English-born son of a clergyman and a teacher. He married Myrna Metcalf.
He and comedian Matt Lucas both graduated from the University of Bristol.
