American football coach best known for his work with the University of Southern California football team, who he coached from 1960 to 1975.
After his widowed mother became sick, he dropped out of college to work as an electrician's assistant in a coal mine.
He went on to coach at the NFL level, working with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
He married Corky Hunter in 1951.
He coached O.J. Simpson to a Heisman Trophy at USC.
