He was a music student at the California Institute of the Arts, where he became influenced by Renaissance and Medieval music.
He has a doctorate in Political Philosophy from the University of Hawai'i and has taught the subject himself.
He was born in Austin, Minnesota.
He is a close friend and frequent collaborator of Los Angeles-based indie pop singer Ariel Pink, whom he befriended in college.
