He started playing trumpet when he was fifteen years old and attended Goldsmiths College in London.
He had a concert by the Hallé Orchestra dedicated to him in 2006 after his death.
He married Susie MacMurray and they raised two sons named Andrew and Matthew together.
MacMurray is a Canadian musician like Sarah McLachlan.
