He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and served in Vietnam, winning six Navy Air medals.
He flew aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1985, the first mission since the Challenger disaster in 1983.
He grew up in Burlington, Colorado.
Anna Fisher was another their American astronaut, and the first mother to go into space.
