Founding member of the alternative rock outfit 10,000 Maniacs who played guitarist and wrote many of their early songs.
He founded 10,000 Maniacs in 1981, but left the group in 1986 due to differences.
He is one-half of the folk duo John and Mary.
He was born and raised in Jamestown, New York.
He originally left 10,000 Maniacs in large part because of creative differences with singer Natalie Merchant, as he rejoined the band after her departure.
