Remembered for such major works of twentieth-century religious philosophy as Evil and the God of Love; Faith and Knowledge; and Death and the Eternal Life, this theologian and philosopher advocated religious pluralism and made significant contributions to the philosophical sub-field of epistemology.

Before Fame

While studying at the University of Edinburgh, he began to carefully examine his previously-held Evangelical Christian beliefs. He eventually joined the United Reform Church and, later, the English branch of the Quaker (Religious Society of Friends) organization.

Trivia

He taught religious philosophy and theology at numerous institutions of higher education, including the University of Birmingham, Cambridge University, Cornell University, and the Princeton University Theological Seminary.

Family Life

He was born and raised in Scarborough, England. He later married Joan Bowers, with whom he raised three children.
