Known for his role as Barnsey Barnes on the popular soap opera EastEnders, he also appeared in Doctor Who and in the American movie Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
Early in his career, he was cast in director Tony Richardson's 1968 film The Charge of the Light Brigade.
In the late 1970s, he played the role of Thomas Mallen in the television series The Mallens.
His nearly thirty-year marriage to Vicky Brinkworth resulted in four children.
He began his acting career at London's Royal National Theatre (founded by legendary actor Laurence Olivier).
