New York-born entrepreneur and founder of Elite Model Management. He is remembered for introducing the idea of the "supermodel" to the fashion world.
He established his Paris-based agency, Elite Model Management, in 1972.
He died of cancer at the age of seventy, while undergoing medical treatment in Brazil.
For the last two decades of his life, he was married to model Aline Wermelinger. He had been married twice before and had had multiple relationships with the models whose careers he managed.
His son, Julian Casablancas, was the lead singer for The Strokes, a New York-based rock band.
