John Ashbery
Poet
Postmodernist, surrealist poet who won a Pulitzer Prize for his 1975 poetry collection, Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror. His other works include The Tennis Court Oath, Some Trees, and As Umbrellas Follow Rain.
He attended New York University and Columbia University. He published his first poetry collection, Turandot and Other Poems, in 1953.
He was an art critic for The New York Times and Newsweek.
He was born in Rochester, New York to Chester and Helen Ashbery. He later settled in New York City with his partner, David Kermani.
W.H. Auden presented Ashbery with the 1956 Yale Younger Poets Prize.
