After serving four months in prison for the Amy Fisher incident, he had numerous other run-ins with the law, from prostitution to insurance fraud.
He grew up in Massapequa, New York. His wife, Mary Jo Buttafuoco, filed for divorce in 2003, about 11 years after she was shot.
For a while after the incident, the name Buttafuoco served as a punchline for many of David Letterman's jokes.
