He began acting when he was young and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
He wrote the screenplay Up Against It for The Beatles, although it was never produced.
He was romantically involved with Kenneth Halliwell from 1951 until 1967 when Halliwell murdered him.
Sir Ralph Richardson starred in the premiere of his final play, What the Butler Saw.
