Joan Lindsay
Novelist
Famous for her 1967 novel Picnic at Hanging Rock, this twentieth-century Australian writer also penned a children's book titled Syd Sixpence (1983) and several satirical works and memoirs.
Before launching her literary career, she trained at Melbourne's National Gallery of Victoria Art School.
In addition to her works of fiction and non-fiction, she wrote several plays, though these were never published and only one, Wolf, was performed.
Born Joan à Beckett Weigall, she grew up in Victoria, Australia, as the daughter of Ann Sophie Hamilton and judge Theyre à Beckett Weigall. Her 1962 memoir Time Without Clocks discusses the early years of her marriage to artist Daryl Lindsay.
The 1975 cinematic adaptation of her novel Picnic at Hanging Rock was directed by Peter Weir.
