Affiliated with the New Zealand National Party, this 24th Leader of the Opposition (from 1984 to 1986) served for four months as Deputy Prime Minister of New Zealand.
After graduating from King's College, Auckland, he earned a law degree from the University of Auckland.
He was the first leader of the National Party to neither represent his party in an election nor ascend to the position of Prime Minister.
His marriage to Marcy Farden resulted in a son named Denis.
He and First Party politician Winston Peters both held office as Deputy Prime Minister of New Zealand.
