Former second baseman, third baseman and manager in the Negro League and MLB.
He won the 1953 Rookie of the Year Award.
He was a four-time World Series Champion for the Dodgers: 1955, 1959, 1963, and 1965.
His father died when he was 2 and his mother worked as a house-keeper so he was mostly raised by his grandmother.
He took over Dodgers second base duties from Jackie Robinson in 1953.
