Louisiana blues singer best remembered for the song Ooh Poo Pah Doo. The song sold over 800,000 copies upon its release and became an instant Mardi Gras favorite.
He started as a drummer, forming his own group in 1951.
Ooh Poo Pah Doo broke the top 5 in the US Billboard R&B charts in 1960.
His grandson is Troy Andrews, a.k.a. Trombone Shorty.
In addition to his own music, he wrote songs for a variety of other artists including Willie Nelson.
