He was a highly talented violin player before switching to the bass guitar at age fourteen.
He has backed numerous artists, including T Lavitz, Don Pullen, and David Sancious.
He married pianist Vicky Fulop-Berlin in 1988; the couple has two sons, Jason and Sean.
He is a well-known jazz fusion artist, much like guitarist Al Di Meola.
