She started out as a receptionist at the offices of designer Charles Eames.
Her set-design career began in the 1980s working on films such as Brian de Palma's Blow Out.
She met her future husband Paul Schrader in college.
Her skills were admired by many of the performers with whom she worked. Actor Jeff Bridges was reportedly so impressed with one of her sets for Seabiscuit that he wanted to buy it and ship it to his ranch.
