As a teenager, he and his brother toured the country playing banjos; he attended an array of music schools, including the Juilliard School, and went on to tour with traveling big bands.
He has been the recipient of The Most Valuable Bassist from National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences multiple times.
He married a singer named Donna Zier, with whom he raised two musical children, Michael and Carolyn.
He worked as a studio musician on songs by Queen Latifah.
