Janko Matuska
Poet
Nineteenth-century author, activist, court clerk, and writer of the Slovak national anthem. His literary works include Puchovska skala (poetry) and Zhoda liptovska (prose).
He attended the Bratislava Lutheran Lyceum but left the school in protest after a professor was fired for holding Slovak nationalist views.
He published ten poetry books over the course of his career.
He was born in Dolny Kubin, Slovakia. He died in his hometown on the day after his fifty-sixth birthday.
He and John Agard are both known for their poetic works.
