Czech-Canadian opera singer and actor who was a winner of a 1990 Earle Grey Award and was appointed a member of the Order of Canada in 1995.
He graduated from the Prague Conservatoire before joining the Prague Opera House as a bass singer.
He played the role of an Amish patriarch in Peter Weir's film Witness.
He was married to Susan Douglas Rubes from 1950 until his death in 2009, and they had three sons.
He played the role of Jan in the film D2: The Mighty Ducks, starring Emilio Estevez.
