The subject of a 2001, Oscar-nominated documentary titled War Photographer, this prominent photojournalist documented conflicts in Northern Ireland, the Middle East, the Soviet Union, South Africa, and other political hot spots.
During the late 1960s and early 1970s, he studied political science and art history at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. He began his career as a photographer for New Mexico's Albuquerque Journal.
While traveling in a United States military vehicle during an assignment in Iraq, he was wounded by an insurgent's grenade.
Born in Syracuse, New York, and raised in Massachusetts, he lived and worked in many locations throughout the world before settling in New York City.
He received numerous honors, including the Dan David Prize and multiple Robert Capa Gold Medals.
