One of Australia's best-known swimmers, he won the silver medal in the 100 m freestyle at the 2012 London Olympics.
He began competing internationally in 2010, winning the Australian Swimming Championships, and taking gold at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
Hyped as the sure winner at the 100m swimming event at the 2012 games in London, he was beaten for first place by 1/100th of a second, and then revealed to have taken a banned substance.
He was born in Port Macquarie, in New South Wales, Australia.
Stephanie Rice was another Australian swimmer representing the country in international competition.
