Pulitzer-Prize winning American stage director known for his collaborations with Tony Award-winning composer and lyricist William Finn.
He took graduate studies in both Photography and Graphic Design at the California Institute of the Arts.
He won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1985 for co-writing the play Sunday in the Park with George.
His daughter Phoebe was a their food critic.
He directed Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods in 1987 and its revival in 1997.
