A true Renaissance man, he studied geology, mined for gold, played professional hockey and rugby, and raced cars; he also held several Ph.D's and spoke possibly 20 languages.
He played England's greatest historical figure, Henry VIII of England in The Sword and the Rose, Ahab in the 1960 Moby Dick, and Sir Lancelot Spratt in the 'Doctor' film series.
Of Irish background, he was married twice, including to the aristocratic movie star Irene von Meyendorff.
Early in his life he was a reporter for Reuters UK, alongside Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond.
