James Dickey
Poet
Poet and author whose 1970 novel, Deliverance, was adapted into a film of the same title. Buckdancer's Choice, his 1965 poetry collection, received the National Book Award.
He played on the football team at Clemson Agricultural College of South Carolina.
He served as the eighteenth Poet Laureate of the United States.
He married Maxine Syerson in 1948, and the couple subsequently raised two sons. Following his first wife's death, Dickey married Deborah Dodson, with whom he had a daughter.
He and James Thurber were both Georgia-born authors.
