He sang in church and was a soprano as a young boy.
He help build a unique choir style that featured large vocal power to build harmonies, individual virtuosity, and driving rhythms.
He had relationships with men which, according to his son, caused him to be diagnosed and then die from AIDS.
Cleveland founded the Gospel Workshop of America and helped produced gospel singer John Kee.
