Boxer known for holding the WBO lightweight title from 2019 to 2021. In 2003, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served two tours of duty in Iraq. He began training for amateur boxing matches two years prior to his enlistment. In 2012, he competed as part of the U.S. boxing team at the Olympic Games in London, England.
He began boxing in his sophomore year of high school.
In 2020, he was ranked #4 best active lightweight boxer by two separate organizations.
He is the son of Michael Mitchell and Jeanine Herring. On September 26, 2015, he married Jennifer Dickerson, whom he had known since childhood. He is the father of six children: Kamren, Stephen, Ariyanah, Jamel, Jazmyne and Justice. In July of 2009, Ariyanah died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
On October 23, 2021, he lost his title to undefeated champion Shakur Stevenson.
