He began his youth career with the Eastern Province Kings in 2004.
In 2015, he was fined $20,000 for his use of a homophobic slur in reference to another player.
He married Angelique Gerber in 2016. They have one son and they had twin girls in February of 2018.
He played alongside Flip van der Merwe on the Blue Bulls.
