He attended Jesuit Collège Stanislas. He entered medical school in 1920 after being deemed too thin to join the military.
His works greatly influenced post-structuralist philosophers in the 1960s and 1970s.
He married Marie-Louise Blondin in January 1934.
He studied the life and work of James Joyce.
