Early American chess champion who was known as "The Kentucky Lion".
He began making a name for himself as a chess player in the late 1800s.
He was a five time U.S. Chess Champion, holding the title in 1890, 1892, 1892–1894, 1895-1896 and 1906–1909.
He was born and raised in Kentucky.
He was proceeded by other strong American players such as Arthur Bisguier.
