He teamed up with the performer Frank Salt to create the musical duo Salt and Pepper.
He was the co-star and husband of Ginger Rogers in 1943.
His daughter Cynthia Pepper also became a prominent Hollywood musician and actress.
He toured with the USO along with his good friend Bob Hope.
