He attended Southern Methodist University. He first signed with Warner Bros. Records, releasing Live at Adair's and re-issuing his first two albums.
He has set a Guinness World record for most radio interviews done in one day.
He grew up in The Woodlands, Texas. He married Amy Ingram. They have three children Ava Adele, Eli and Hudson.
His album Big Dreams & High Hopes featured a duet with Patty Griffin called "Seeing Stars."
