Actor who played the Tin Man in the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz. His other film credits include Moon Over Miami, Beyond the Blue Horizon, and George White's Sandals.
He performed in vaudeville and comedy shorts before transitioning to a career in film.
In 2000, his autobiography Heart of the Tin Man was published.
He was married to Florence McFadden from 1921 until his death. His son, Jack Jr., became a film producer and was married to Liza Minnelli, daughter of Jack Sr.'s Wizard of Oz co-star Judy Garland, for five years.
He and Ray Bolger, who portrayed the Scarecrow, were both immortalized for their roles in The Wizard of Oz.
