The first Israeli astronaut, he was killed in Space Shuttle Columbia's re-entry accident.
He was a fighter pilot in the Israeli Air Force.
He is the first foreign recipient of the U.S. Congressional Space Medal of Honor, awarded posthumously.
He was married and had four children.
He and Kaplana Chawla both died aboard Columbia and both were the first NASA astronauts from their respective countries.
