Religious Leader
Founder of the Society of Jesus who acted as its first Superior General and also was a Spanish knight, hermit, priest, and theologian. During the Counter-Reformation, he gained prominence as a religious leader.
He was struck by a cannonball when the French Army stormed Pamplona's fortress in 1521.
He was beatified by Pope Paul V in 1609 and canonized in 1622 by Pope Gregory XV.
He was the 13th of 13 children born to a Basque family.
Pope Francis was a notable Jesuit of the Society of Jesus.
